STATEMENT

Lu Lee and Ajha My work at this time is concerned with linear variations though drawn lines. I’m influenced by natural marks. I notice track lines made by small creatures and see line drawings. I look at mountains stained by water, sun, and wind and see tonal changes. The marks left by humans from the past, and contemporary human waste are also an influence. This is my world- where everything I see and experience is transformed in my mind into a drawing.

My palette choice of tonal blacks and grays, is a decision arrived at thorough my process of observing and drawing. There is an elusive sensuality that i’m searching for in with this process of tone and line. My drawings have many layers-They are scraped, reversed, inked and printed. After using the print process, graphite and smoke is added. This layer is symbolic of the fragility of the paper and our suroundings. And yes the smoke is arrived at with fire, the smoky lines are applied with a candle flame kissing the paper. The softness of the smoke, is intriguing , contrasted with the danger of fire. The smoky lines add a dimension to the work.

The use of the print process allows me the opportunity to explore the possibilities of multiple images. My large drawings began as lithographs. Lithography is a print process which involves drawing on a stone or litho plate with a greasy medium. The plate or stone is processed to accept ink on the drawn areas and to reject ink on the negative areas. My smaller works began as intaglio prints. Intaglio differs from Lithography, in that the lines are cut or etched into metal plates. The plate is inked and the etched lines are printed. The lines in this work were made with a power tool.

My intent for this body of work is to interpret my place in the natural world which has inspired me with it’s optimism and ability to adjust to human intervention.
